East Africa Safari 2002

In Sept/Oct of 2002 I took a trip of a life time to East Africa for a safari with my Dad, sister and girlfriend Nikki. It has long been a dream of my Dad's to travel to East Africa for a safari trip. He put together a three week adventure to Kenya and Tanzania which included a two week camping safari. It took a lot of planning to work out all the details but it was well worth it. We chose that timeframe because it was the tail end of the dry season - a great time to see animals but man it was HOT!!!!

Our first week was spent at a coastal beach house in Mombasa, Kenya on the Indian Ocean. It was geat to be able to relax for a week and get ready for the camping trip - we knew it would be hard once we were out camping in wild. Naturally, a lot of pictures were taken. We had them all digitized and have put them up here. The animal shots are mainly in the SLR section. Enjoy.

I have put together a page of memories and highlights from the trip complete with references to the pictures. A nice overview of the experience from the trip.

The trip took us to many national parks across Kenya and Tanzania. We visited the following safari parks:

The Ngorongoro Crater is a huge crater left behind from a volcano that exploded roughly 2.6 million years ago. It created a 13 mile wide crater in which many different animals live. I took several images of the crater and spliced them together to give you an idea of the size and beauty of the crater. My picture of the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania.

If you have any questions regarding the trip, please feel free to email me. If you are interested in booking a trip like this - please contact me for ideas and tips on what to do.

Camping Safari

Possibly the most amazing thing about the safari was the fact that we were camping in the parks, totally un-protected. The camp sites were located in the parks along with the animals. We'd have lions drink at our water tank, hyenas, zebras and wild pigs visit us at night and we woke up once with an elephant in the camp site. It was pretty amazing and surreal and I'm not sure we all understood that before we went on the trip. It certainly was an experience of a lifetime! If you are an avid camper and can survive for 5 days with no shower then I highly recommend it - but be prepared to get dirty. HA HA!
